MTFs in transition are looking to masculinize the body form. In the past, this has been limited to top and bottom surgery and essentially removing what is felt to be foreign to their gender identity and adding what is missing. But there is considerably more to refining the masculine body form that is the focus of this workshop. Dr. Tony Mangubat will discuss the artistic aspects that differentiate the masculine body form from the feminine body form. By understanding these differences, the doctor and patient can better verbalize and visualize the desired results.
Dr. Mangubat will introduce a refined concept in chest masculinization. The current idea of top surgery is to simply remove gland tissue so the chest can be flat. The idea of masculinization is simplified to a flat chest. But artistically, we know that this couldn’t be further from reality.
We now focus on enhancing the visual appearance of the chest muscles as well as the bordering anatomy. We have evolved into artistically sculpting a truly masculine form. With the advent of new and exciting technologies, we can create a more masculine chest as well as sculpt an abdominal “6-pack” further enhancing the masculine form. Dr. Mangubat will also review the essentials of achieving an ideal outcome. What to do before and after your surgery is vital to realizing your goals.

Trans* and gender diverse populations are a significantly oppressed minority. With no legal protections at a state or federal level, discrimination is often all too real for most individuals outside of the cisgender binaries. Frequently, trans* individuals are denied equal access to healthcare and may also lack culturally competent healthcare. This is especially true in rural environments. In fact, living in a rural environment affects many aspects of quality of life for transgender people.
Unfortunately, rural states like Montana have very little information about their trans* and gender diverse communities. For this reason, with support from the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services, researchers in the Community Health program at the University of Montana partnered with the director of the Gender Expansion Project in early 2013 to develop a comprehensive needs assessment.
The overall goal of the assessment was to give voice to individuals in the trans* community and ultimately provide an accurate portrayal of the lives of trans* and gender diverse Montanans. A second goal was to begin the process of gathering accurate data related to current HIV and STD transmission risk factors. The findings presented represent the results of the first phase of a research study using interviews and Photovoice methodologies to explore the contextual factors that influence transgender individuals’ quality of life and risk of HIV infection.

While most people have similar concerns, some of the more challenging issues are unique to People of Color such as increased scarring and varying degrees of scar and skin coloring after surgery. This lecture is not just for POC because in order to understand the after surgery journey, we need to understand the unique needs of all patients undergoing surgery. Once you’ve decided to have surgery, it is critical to understand what lies ahead so there are NO SURPRISES.
Surgery is foreign and frightening to most individuals but for trans people, surgery is often essential to achieving their gender identity. While there are many different procedures that are common in the trans community this workshop will emphasize what you need to do to get ready for any procedure. We will address how to care for yourself after surgery to ensure a successful outcome. Knowing the essential details help your journey with NO SURPRISES!
This will be a lecture presentation with an emphasis on open questions to facilitate a conversation with the audience. This will stimulate a more engaging discussion that will lead to a better understanding of this important topic.

The goal of this workshop is to promote awareness recognizing transgender people while they are in the workplace environment. The nitty-gritty details boil all the way down to restroom use, laws pertaining to working trans people, medical care, social issues and more. While we teach this to raise awareness, we hope that you leave with a better understanding on current issues, and to potentially become a better ally yourself.
