Trans-Sculpting the Human Form

MTFs in transition are looking to masculinize the body form.  In the past, this has been limited to top and bottom surgery and essentially removing what is felt to be foreign to their gender identity and adding what is missing.  But there is considerably more to refining the masculine body form that is the focus of this workshop. Dr. Tony Mangubat will discuss the artistic aspects that differentiate the masculine body form from the feminine body form.  By understanding these differences, the doctor and patient can better verbalize and visualize the desired results.

Dr. Mangubat will introduce a refined concept in chest masculinization.  The current idea of top surgery is to simply remove gland tissue so the chest can be flat.  The idea of masculinization is simplified to a flat chest.  But artistically, we know that this couldn’t be further from reality.

We now focus on enhancing the visual appearance of the chest muscles as well as the bordering anatomy.  We have evolved into artistically sculpting a truly masculine form.  With the advent of new and exciting technologies, we can create a more masculine chest as well as sculpt an abdominal “6-pack” further enhancing the masculine form.  Dr. Mangubat will also review the essentials of achieving an ideal outcome.  What to do before and after your surgery is vital to realizing your goals.

Serving those of Gender Diversity in Hard Times | Serving our trans* homeless populations
Homelessness is a critical issue for transgender people; one in five transgender individuals have experienced homelessness at some point in their lives. Family rejection and discrimination and violence have contributed to a large number of transgender and other LGBQ-identified youth who are homeless in the United States – an estimated 20-40% of the more than 1.6 million homeless youth. Unfortunately, social service and homeless shelters that work with this population often fail to culturally and appropriately serve transgender homeless people, including denying them shelter based on their gender identity; inappropriately housing them in a gendered space they do not identify with; and failing to address co-occurring issues facing transgender homeless adults and youth. This workshop focuses on helping those who work in social services gain a better understanding of how to serve those of gender diversity who may be facing homelessness.

The Indigenous peoples of this land referred to as North America have many cultural traditions that have often been misrepresented or suppressed through the colonization process. Many of these are significantly different perspectives about sex, gender and sexuality than those imported from Western Europe. One tradition that was nearly lost is what is generically referred to as Two-Spirit (lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender Native peoples). This interactive session will examine the past, present and future of the Two-Spirit peoples with a focus on issues around gender diversity, sexuality and spirituality both historically and contemporarily and their implication to the larger LGBT movement.

Sexual Violence in the Trans* Community
More than half of trans people are sexual assault survivors. Healing is possible. Navigating traditional therapeutic services can be daunting. Exploring non-traditional techniques can be scary. Trans survivors may have concerns about disclosing survivorship to providers who may hold the keys to transition-related services like hormones and surgery. Conversely, trans survivors and loved ones may justifiably worry that providers skilled in working with survivors may not be trans-informed. This workshop will help survivors and loved ones learn about available healing options and gain practical strategies to ensure the best possible outcome. Participants will leave with more knowledge about traditional, non-traditional and self-help options to support healing from sexual assault, as well as resources and tools to help make the best healing choices.

Trans* HIV in Montana

Trans* and gender diverse populations are a significantly oppressed minority. With no legal protections at a state or federal level, discrimination is often all too real for most individuals outside of the cisgender binaries. Frequently, trans* individuals are denied equal access to healthcare and may also lack culturally competent healthcare. This is especially true in rural environments. In fact, living in a rural environment affects many aspects of quality of life for transgender people.

Unfortunately, rural states like Montana have very little information about their trans* and gender diverse communities. For this reason, with support from the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services, researchers in the Community Health program at the University of Montana partnered with the director of the Gender Expansion Project in early 2013 to develop a comprehensive needs assessment.

The overall goal of the assessment was to give voice to individuals in the trans* community and ultimately provide an accurate portrayal of the lives of trans* and gender diverse Montanans. A second goal was to begin the process of gathering accurate data related to current HIV and STD transmission risk factors. The findings presented represent the results of the first phase of a research study using interviews and Photovoice methodologies to explore the contextual factors that influence transgender individuals’ quality of life and risk of HIV infection.

Trans Mental Health Care – Day 1
In 2012, the APA released the DSM 5 which reclassified Gender Identity Disorder as Gender Dysphoria, but what does this mean for those of gender diversity? Many individuals of gender diversity face adversity within the mental health care system, but it’s a challenge many of are forced to deal with head on, and often alone. This course focuses on creating a healthy environment for individuals of  gender diversity while trying to remove and end the long term stigmas of gatekeeping, red tape and bias that often surround the mental health community.  Day 1 of this 2 day course focuses on raising awareness of barriers and creating individualized care focused on helping individuals through the stumbling blocks of their transition, rather than creating hurdles for those of gender diversity.

Postoperative Challenges for LGBTQ Community People of Color (POC)

While most people have similar concerns, some of the more challenging issues are unique to People of Color such as increased scarring and varying degrees of scar and skin coloring after surgery.  This lecture is not just for POC because in order to understand the after surgery journey, we need to understand the unique needs of all patients undergoing surgery.  Once you’ve decided to have surgery, it is critical to understand what lies ahead so there are NO SURPRISES.

Surgery is foreign and frightening to most individuals but for trans people, surgery is often essential to achieving their gender identity.  While there are many different procedures that are common in the trans community this workshop will emphasize what you need to do to get ready for any procedure.  We will address how to care for yourself after surgery to ensure a successful outcome.  Knowing the essential details help your journey with NO SURPRISES!

This will be a lecture presentation with an emphasis on open questions to facilitate a conversation with the audience.  This will stimulate a more engaging discussion that will lead to a better understanding of this important topic.

Partners in Transition
Whether our partners are post transition, just beginning to question their gender, or negotiating an identity somewhere in the middle, their journeys can have major implications for our feelings about sex and attraction. Were you involved primarily with women and never expected to be having sex with someone trans or male-identified? How do you feel about your partner’s body—including their new smell, look, or changing parts? Is being with your partner opening you up to new sexual desires? Are your ideas about your sexual orientation shifting? We will explore many of the common questions, concerns, and desires of the partners of folks in transition and look at ways to reach out for support during the many stages involved.

Trans* HIV/STD Prevention & Treatment
Many trans and gender diverse individuals are often times fearful of being tested out of fear of having to disclose their transgender status, fear of criminalization, fear of having to discuss intimate details of their sexual encounters, either casually or professionally, and for a host of other reason. Often times many HIV+ trans and gender diverse individuals report that they felt that the risk factors didn’t apply to them because they were trans. HIV and STDs are a major concern in the gender diverse community. Change starts through creating an environment where trans individuals are provided with the facts as they apply to those of trans identity, creating a welcoming and inclusive environment and breaking past many myths and misconceptions surrounding the transgender and gender diverse community. Whether you are a tester, community activist or health care professional, you can walk away from this session with a better understand of how to serve our gender diverse communities.

This workshop will also aim to discuss some of the barriers facing transgender homeless people, sex workers, and people of color when reporting sexual assault and relationship violence. While this workshop would be of most benefit to social workers, victim advocates, and medical professionals, it is open to all.

Trans Mental Health Care – Day 2
In 2012, the APA released the DSM 5 which reclassified Gender Identity Disorder as Gender Dysphoria, but what does this mean for those of gender diversity? Many individuals of gender diversity face adversity within the mental health care system, but it’s a challenge many of are forced to deal with head on, and often alone. This course focuses on creating a healthy environment for individuals of  gender diversity while trying to remove and end the long term stigmas of gatekeeping, red tape and bias that often surround the mental health community.  Day 2 of this 2 day course focuses on raising awareness of barriers and creating individualized care focused on helping individuals through the stumbling blocks of their transition, rather than creating hurdles for those of gender diversity.
