Many trans and gender diverse individuals are often times fearful of being tested out of fear of having to disclose their transgender status, fear of criminalization, fear of having to discuss intimate details of their sexual encounters, either casually or professionally, and for a host of other reason. Often times many HIV+ trans and gender diverse individuals report that they felt that the risk factors didn’t apply to them because they were trans. HIV and STDs are a major concern in the gender diverse community. Change starts through creating an environment where trans individuals are provided with the facts as they apply to those of trans identity, creating a welcoming and inclusive environment and breaking past many myths and misconceptions surrounding the transgender and gender diverse community. Whether you are a tester, community activist or health care professional, you can walk away from this session with a better understand of how to serve our gender diverse communities.
